public_safety_iconFire protection services result in low property loss and no fire deaths.

Fire suppression and prevention activities result in low dollar loss in relation to affected properties, and low injuries and deaths from fire. This is achieved through fire code enforcement including review of development projects, inspection of new commercial buildings and annual maintenance inspections of all commercial occupancies. Fire prevention activities, featuring an aggressive public fire education program, reduce the risk of fires, injuries and deaths. Citizens are educated and take precautions to protect their families and property. Adequate fire fighter staffing, training, equipment, apparatus and strategic station locations help to control fire loss.

Caution Ratio of total estimated value of fire loss to total appraised value of residential property

Description

Residential fire dollar loss per $1 Million appraised residential property value. This is found by dividing the total residential fire loss by the total appraised residential value in $M. This basically shows the level of fire loss in our residential community.

Analysis

We experienced an increase of residential fire loss for 2018.  We experienced several house fires that had been burning for a while and already spread through the house before the fire was noticed and the Fire Department was notified.  This reduced our chances to limit the fire loss on those fires.  Some of these fires originated in the garage or when people weren't at home where they went unnoticed for longer time.  5 residential fires were over $100,000 loss.  We offer free smoke detector installations, as well as check smoke detectors while at homes on emergency calls.  We continue to investigate ways to catch the fire quicker and possibly extinguish.  Research includes early warning smoke detectors as well as the possibility of fire sprinklers for garages and attics.

Caution Ratio of total estimated value of fire loss to total appraised value of commercial property

Description

Commercial fire dollar loss per $1 Million appraised commercial property value. Commercial includes multifamily complexes.  This is found by dividing the total commercial fire loss by the total appraised commercial value in $M. This basically shows the level of fire loss in our business community. This is important as fire loss hurts our businesses as well as City revenue stream.

Analysis

We had a commercial fire that happened at night and wasn't noticed until it had spread through the restaurant, causing direct and indirect fire damage.  The majority of the commercial fire loss is related to fires in multifamily complexes, although only one of them was over $100,000 loss.  The fires with notable loss were in buildings without sprinkler systems.  We continue to work with businesses and property owners to assure sufficient fire notification systems to limit fire spread and damage.
